Keywords:PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Central Falls School District followed procedures that are "appropriate under the law" in firing all the high school teachers and asking them to reapply for their jobs, its lawyer argued in U.S. District Court on Friday.
Stephen M. Robinson filed arguments asking Senior Judge Mary M. Lisi to throw out a lawsuit filed by the Central Falls Teachers Union which seeks to block the mass dismissal of high school teachers as part of an effort to turn around the school.
Meanwhile, the union asked Lisi to recuse herself from hearing the case, citing a potential conflict in the fact that a woman employed as a federal court interpreter is also a Central Falls school trustee who voted to approve the teacher firings in February.
Lisi has given the school district until next Wednesday to state its position on the potential conflict.
