PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Certification tests for people who want to work as lifeguards and have completed training will start May 26 for non-surf positions and May 27 for surf positions, the state Department of Environmental Management said Friday.

Those who hold valid cards in first aid, lifeguard training and CPR for infants, children and adults can get a non-surf test from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 26, June 16 and June 30 at the Prosser Grove Picnic Area at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown, a DEM official said.

Qualified candidates requiring a surf certification will be tested from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 27 and June 16 at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett.

Before the state certification card can be issued, applicants must pay a $10 fee.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and must present a photo I.D. with verification of date of birth. Any candidate younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign the waiver/application form.

If weather threatens on the day of testing, non-surf candidates are advised to call Burlingame State Park at (401) 322-8910 and surf candidates to call Scarborough at (401) 789-2324.
