DOT to shift Providence Route 95 Exit 20 Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Motorists on Routes 95 and 195 in Providence will encounter more changes this year as the Rhode Island Department of Transportation moves toward completion of the Iway project, the DOT said Wednesday in a news release.

The first of these is the relocation of Exit 20 [Route195 east] on Route 95 south. The relocation is scheduled to start during the early morning hours of Saturday and conclude by noon.

Exit 20 will be shifted to its final location, approximately a half mile to the north of where it is today, and will be located just south of the Broad Street overpass. This means that motorists will encounter the exit sooner than they do now. Those wishing to take exit 20 should be in the right lanes as they pass Providence Place Mall and the Atwells Avenue off-ramp [exit 21] in order to avoid having to make a sudden lane change for exit 20.

During the relocation, only one lane on exit 20 may be open. Traffic volumes early on Saturday morning are typically light. However, motorists may wish to take Route 10 [exit 22] to bypass this area.

This construction project is the first of many scheduled for this year for the Iway project. These will include new on- and off-ramps in the Point Street and hospitals area and a new ramp for exit 2 from Route 195 west. Additionally, the DOT expects to begin demolition of the old Route 195 highway this year.

Motorists with questions can contact the DOT's Customer Service office at 401-222-2450 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional information will be available on the Web site [www.dot.ri.gov] and its social media sites on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blogger.
