Brown president to receive Ellis Island award

Brown University President Ruth Simmons will receive a prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the national monument in New York City on Saturday.

Prior to the ceremony, Simmons and other new recipients, including actress Jane Seymour and director James Keach, will attend a pre-gala celebration at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park, sponsored by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations.

NECO, which is presenting the 25th annual awards, seeks to honor the nation's diverse past by paying tribute to the ancestry groups that have contributed to American culture. Recipients are selected for making outstanding contributions to their communities, their nation and the world. Previous winners include Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Generals Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell, Muhammad Ali, Quincy Jones and Walter Cronkite.

Simmons became the 18th president of Brown in 2001
