Accused North Providence council president resigns

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- North Providence Town Council President Joseph Burchfield has resigned.

The Town Clerk's office said Friday afternoon that Burchfield's one-page resignation letter was received just before 4 p.m.

In it, the man who is one of three arraigned on corruption charges Thursday afternoon, says he is stepping down immediately.

Stefani Turcotte, a senior clerk in the town clerk's office, declined to release the text of the letter, saying it had not yet been reviewed by the town clerk, who was not in the office late Friday afternoon.

The clerk is Mary Ann DeAngelus, sister of John A. Zambarano, a second councilman indicted in the case. The third is Raymond L. Douglas III.
