Grand jury indicts accused killer of Providence teen

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 20-year-old North Providence man, accused of shooting a Providence teenager in the leg and then fatally shooting the teen's younger brother outside a birthday party on Providence Street on Dec. 13, has been charged with counts of murder and assault with a dangerous weapon in an indictment handed up Thursday by a Providence County Grand Jury.

Joel Sanchez, of 5 Greystone Ave., North Providence, has been held without bail since turning himself in to police after the shooting.

Police say that Sanchez shot and killed 16-year-old John Carlos Tavarez after the tried to catch him for shooting his older brother, Kennber Paulino, outside the party. Tavarez had been a student at the Providence Career and Technical Academy and was one of five brothers.

In addition to charging Sanchez with murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, the grand jury indicted him one a count of carrying a weapon while committing a crime of violence and discharging a firearm while commiting a crime of violence, death resulting.

He is to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on May 12.
