Flood watch on for R.I. starting Thursday morning

TAUNTON, Mass. -- The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from Thursday morning through Friday morning for Rhode Island, northern Connecticut, Massachusetts, and southern New Hampshire.

The weather said that the combination of moderate to heavy rain and snow melt is expected to bring the potential for flooding to the watch area. On Thursday rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is forecast.

Vulnerable are areas where drainage is poor, especially in places where recent snowfall has produced snow-clogged drains. Small stream flooding is also possible. A few larger tributaries may near flood stage during Thursday into Friday. The Pawtuxet River at Cranston may reach its 9-foot flood stage Thursday afternoon.

The Weather Service said that people should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
