PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - Days after stepping aside as House majority whip, state Rep. Peter Kilmartin, D-Pawtucket, has taken the first big step in his campaign for attorney general.

Kilmartin announced that he will be formally announcing his candidacy for the job currently held by the state's term-limited Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch on Tuesday, February 23, at the Portuguese Social Club at 31 School Street, Pawtucket. Lynch is running for governor.

Majority whip under former House Speaker William J. Murphy, Kilmartin did not run for reelection to own leadership post during the party caucus that preceded the election of Murphy's top deputy, Gordon D. Fox, to succeed him last week.

Kilmartin is a former Pawtucket police captain, attorney, and adjunct professor at Providence College, and member of the House of Representatives since 1991.
