PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Police officers were gathering in droves at Rhode Island Hospital in support of two narcotics detectives who were shot while conducting a drug raid early Monday evening on Hollis Street in the city's West End.

Narcotics detectives Carlos A. Sical and Juan R. Robles were shot, one in the leg and one in the arm, the police said.

Neighbors said two ambulances responded to Hollis Street after one officer radioed that another officer was down.

The police cordoned off Hollis Street from Parade to Diamond streets.

Robels and Sical have been involved in intensive undercover investigations of mid- and street-level drug dealers throughout the city. Both have won Chiefs Awards for their drug investigations.

Sical was involved in Operation Crackdown in 2006, which resulted in the arrest of 96 crack cocaine dealers.

Robles was awarded the Chiefs Award in October for an organized-crime bust, called Operation Rosa, in which 29 people were arrested.

Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch was among those reporting to the hospital to show his concern for the officers injured in the line of duty.
