Red Sox give up on John Smoltz

Published Aug. 7, 2009 at 9:31 p.m.

The Boston Red Sox have designated future Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz for assignment a day after Smoltz was roughed up by the New York Yankees. Terry Francona made the announcement while speaking to reporters today in the Bronx, according to our Dan Barbarisi.

The Red Sox have also designated for assignment Billy Traber, the journeyman reliever who entered the game in place of Smoltz last night.

Boston has called up Japanese rookie Junichi Tazawa from Pawtucket and picked up veteran shortstop Chris Woodward off waivers from Seattle.

We'll have more later this evening on our SoxBlog...
